O Canada
I won a lottery for many reasons.
I am a male, white, born in North America, in a middle-class family, with 2 parents around.
Considering the population of the world and what I was born with, I did win the lottery. One of the many reasons I don’t play the lottery now, I already had a big win.
On top of all this, I was born in Canada with citizenship there and then moved to America with my parents/siblings and we all got American citizenship as well. That makes me even more of a lucky guy. I can live/work/reside in either country, anytime I want.
The countries are similar but also so very different. I have lived in the United States for more of my life than in Canada and it has been very good to me, especially given all the privilege I have given I am a white, well educated male. I continue to try to live my live with empathy for others who were less fortunate in the “lottery” but doesn’t mean I am for just giving out handouts, more to come on that topic in future blogs.
I am proudly Canadian and always will be. I do believe that Canada is a more fair and equitable society that the USA. I believe healthcare should be a right and ran by the government. I have personally seen the waste of the American “health system” and it is so inefficient and bloated, the waste I have seen is unimaginable to most. Big healthcare systems, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and medical supply companies care more about profit than care, it is obvious to me.
Alright off my soap box, what I really want to say is I am lucky to be both Canadian and American, and hope that the United States becomes a bit more like Canada than the other way around. The Olympics are coming up and I will be cheering on the Canadian men’s and woman’s hockey teams!! Go Canada!
